Valerianella locusta (L.) Betcke                     European Corn Salad

Plant usually dichotomously branched, 1.5-3 dm tall, mostly glabrous; basal leaves spatulate 3-5 cm long, 6-15 mm wide, entire; upper stem leaves broadly linear to oblong, 1.5-2.0 cm long, entire or slightly toothed, peduncles short; cymes head-like, 6-12 mm broad; bracts linear; corolla pinkish or bluish, about 2 mm long; fruit 2 mm long, about as broad, compressed laterally, empty cells with a narrow groove between them, the fertile cell with a corky mass on the dorsal side; in waste places and cultivated fields.
