Typhaceae                                                                Cat-tail Family

Tall perennials of wet places, leaves alternate, linear, sheathing; stems round, erect, pithy; flowers in dense terminal racemes, the staminate above the pistillate, interspersed with many hairs; fruit dry, later becoming dehiscent, the seeds buoyant by long hairs and modified floral parts; root a large, round, rhizome; widespread, usually in dense stands.
