Stems
1-3 m high, erect, some branches arching, prickly below but less so above, bark
tan and shredding; leaves pinnately 3-foliate, doubly-triply-serrate, terminal
leaflet 4-9 cm long, the lateral ones smaller; petals red, showy; stamens to
100, pistils numerous; fruit semifleshy, raspberry-like, yellowish to reddish,
not flavorful in our area; moist woods, lowlands to lower mountains.
It is known that the early Americans found the young shoots delicious.
