with stems opposite or alternate, without stipules, veins of leaves apparently
parallel; flowers in dense terminal spikes or heads with long scapes, or rarely
solitary; calyx lobes imbricate and persist-ent; corolla 4-lobed, persistent,
membranous; stamens 4; filaments filiform, stigma filiform; fruit a pyxis,
circumsessile near the middle.
