Penstemon procerus Dougl.                   Tall Penstemon

Plant stems clustered in a mat from a woody caudex, 0.5-4 dm tall; leaves entire, basal ones petiolate, up to 10 cm long and to 3 cm wide, often wanting; cauline leaves few mostly sessile up to 8 cm long and 3 cm wide, sometimes smaller; inflorescence of 1 to several verticels, flowers more or less hanging downward; calyx 1.5-7 mm high; corolla deep blue-purple (sometimes lighter) 6-11 mm long, somewhat spreading, not strongly bilabiate; palate expanded staminode bearded, pollen sacs glabrous becoming opposite and explanate; dry meadows and open or timbered slopes from lowland to timberline.
