Gaultheria shallon Pursh                           Salal

Shrub about 0.5-2 m high, some branches often decumbent; leaves ovate, rounded, slightly cordate, acuminate, serrulate, 3-10 cm long; racemes many-flowered, one-sided, terminal, sticky, hairy; corolla white or pink, ovoid, 6-10 mm long; fruit black or dark purple; found throughout the Douglas Fir forest, berries edible.
