A much branched
shrub, 2-5 m tall, with red twigs, hairy when young; leaves ovate to oval,
acute, cuneate at the base, glabrous above, pubescent beneath 4-8 cm long,
peti-oles 1-2 cm long; cymes short-pedunculate, 2-6 cm broad; flowers
cream-colored, 6-8 mm broad; fruit globose, white; stone oblique, compressed,
edge furrowed; in wet ground, especially along stream banks; common.
Two varieties are noted: one with stone of fruit smooth, C.S. var.
stolon-ifera, and one with stone grooved lengthwise, C.S. var. occidentalis T.
& G.) Hitchc., mostly in different ranges.
