Herbs,
nodes swollen in some species; leaves opposite and entire; flowers sometimes
solitary but usually in cymes, petals may be entire, bi-lobed, or fringed; in
some species the petal is modified into an upper, expanded blade and a lower,
narrow claw from which an extension may grow upward across the blade, the
appendage, and sometimes a lateral ear grows upward on each side of the claw,
the auricle; fruit a capsule, achene or utricle.
