characteristic hairs; flowers in racemes, spikes or corymbs; sepals 4; petals 4,
sometimes wanting, in the form of a cross, equal, generally clawed, alternate
with the sepals; 6 stamens of unequal length 2 short and 4 longer; pistil 1 of 2
carpels; fruit usually 2-celled, dehiscing by the two valves separating from the
central partition, rarely indehiscent, either longer than broad (silique) or
short (silicle).
