Berberis L.                                     Oregon Grape; Mahonia

       Shrubs with yellowish wood; leaves simple or compound, margins spiny; flowers yellow in racemes; sepals 6, petal-like, subtended by 3 bracts; petals 6; fruit a berry.

Berberis aquifolium Pursh                            Shining Oregongrape

        Shrub 1-3 m tall; leaves 1-2.5 dm long; leaflets 5-9, 3-8 cm long by 2-5 cm broad, glossy, pale beneath, 8-10 spiny teeth along each side; racemes clustered below the level of the mid-leaf; berries blue, ovoid; rocky places, common in the lowlands.
