Plants from
nearly naked rhizomes; stems solitary or a few together, 1-6 dm tall; basal
leaves often on separate short shoots; cauline leaves 2-4 pairs, sometimes
glandular and/or hairy, sessile or petiolate, lance-elliptic to broader, more or
less caudate at times, more or less toothed, 3-14 cm long and 1.5-8 cm wide,
middle ones usually larger than the upper and lower ones; heads 1-3, sometimes
more; involucre 10-18 mm, usually glandular; pappus white, barbellate; moist
meadows and woods or open places in the mountains.
