Plant 3-9 dm
tall; leaves ternately compound; leaflets cleft and lobed, pale beneath; flowers
nodding, scarlet and yellow; sepals petal-like, 5, spreading and reflexed, red;
lower part of petals closed forming a long tube (the spur), usually red; upper
part of petals light to bright yellow; follicles mostly 5; common on wooded
hillsides and roadsides.
