The goals of the Natural Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research
Program are to engage students in active exploration of how
science is done and to stimulate science research activities
at Pacific Lutheran University.
Science is a creative endeavor involving both imagination and
rigorous testing of ideas. Focused investigations under the
guidance of faculty mentors add a new dimension to learning
that cannot be obtained from textbooks and laboratory assignments
alone. By experiencing both the setbacks and the breakthroughs
of research, students in the program will gain confidence in
their ability to face unknowns and solve problems, develop habits
of mind that characterize scientists, and realize the excitement
of discovery. Through their participation in collaborative research,
they will bring a richer understanding of science to their future
roles as professionals and citizens in the modern world.
Faculty research projects and teaching will be enhanced by participation
in the summer program. Overall, the program will be an element
of distinction for the Division of Natural Sciences and for
PLU.
